Construction Management Student Association

Construction Management ClassroomThe Construction Management Student Association is a highly-active group comprised of Construction Management students who want to advance their educational experience and career opportunities.

The CMSA is comprised of four groups:

Construction Management ClassroomMonthly meetings on the first Tuesday of each month provide students the opportunity to meet and hear industry experts, connect with others in their major, and learn about coming events. CMSA regularly schedules field trips to construction sites where students can see professionals working on-site and gain experience and possible business contacts. Field trips are typically held on the first Friday of each month. In addition, students have the opportunity to be involved in construction competitions (AGC, MCAA, NAHB), community service, and social events. Illinois State students also join others in the area for hands-on experience every Saturday through Habitat for Humanity.

For more information and a listing of the bylaws, officers, and an application form please visit CMSA on the student share drive.

AGC/ASC Regional Construction Competitions

The Illinois State University Construction Management program is an active participant in the AGC/ASC Regional Construction Competitions. The competition, held each fall, involves teams from the 22 construction programs in the Great Lakes Region of ASC. Teams competed in one of three divisions: commercial, design-build, or heavy highway construction. Each competition is sponsored by a construction firm who provides a panel of experts to organize and judge the competition. Elements of the competition include estimating, scheduling, site logistics, risk management, and problem solving.

Illinois Protective Officials Conference (IPOC) Chapter of the International Codes Council

The Illinois Protective Officials Conference (IPOC) Chapter of the International Codes Council was established in 1997 to provide an opportunity for CM students to better understand building codes and how they are developed and roles and functions of building code officials. The IPOC student chapter hosts speakers to discuss on regulatory issues in construction as well as sponsoring field trips where students can see firsthand how building inspections are conducted. Several students annually select careers as building officials and many jurisdictions in Illinois recruit students from the Illinois State CM program.

Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCCA)

Construction ManagementWith the advent of an Illinois State student chapter of the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) in 2001, students began participating in the MCAA competition. The competition requires a team to submit a written proposal, completed at their home university during the fall semester. The MCAA reviews the proposals and selects four teams as finalists to present at their annual convention. In Illinois State's first year of competing, our team was one of four of the original ten teams who was asked to compete at the MCAA Competition. The team received an honorable mention for placing third in the final competition. Keith Rahn is the faculty advisor for MCAA and the competition team.

Keith Rahn, faculty advisor for MCAA and seven students went to New Orleans from November 17–23, 2005 to help out mechanical contractors who had been affected by Hurricane Katrina. Mechanical Contractors of Chicago and the national organization have been great supporters of the construction management program and the trip allowed the students to "give back" to the industry. They helped four Mechanical Contractors and the MCA of New Orleans with cleanup and repair efforts.

National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Competition

NAHB MembersFor over 12 years the Illinois State Construction Management program has participated annually in the NAHB Residential Competition sponsored by the Bloomington-Normal Area Home Builders Association, Centex Homes, Pulte Homes, and the Residential Construction Employers Council of Chicago. A six-person team is selected early in the fall semester to prepare for the competition. The team developed an 80-page business proposal for a 183-unit town home community currently under construction in Addison, Texas. The competition has been established to give students the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to solve construction-related problems. Students work on a management proposal for a real project by completing an estimate, schedule, cash flow forecast, and other essential elements of the proposal. The proposals are then submitted to a group of construction company executives who act as judges. The Illinois State team was ranked ninth out of 35 participating schools in an evaluation of their written proposals and presentations.

The NAHB competition team members for 2006: Scott Sanders, Steve Genovese, Jonathan Ribskis, Brad Roulo, Jon Stapel, and Ryan Welborn.
