T

he Construction Management (CM) Program has been preparing students for leadership roles in the construction industry for over 20 years and continues to proactively evolve to meet future needs.

Students Surveying LandThe goal of the CM program is to provide students with high-quality educational experiences that will develop the technical and managerial knowledge and skills necessary for successful leadership roles in the building construction industry. The CM program is accredited by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE).

As the building industry changes, our program must change to align with contemporary building and management practices. Owners today are demanding high-quality structures with an array of complex technological building systems. Buildings must also be affordable and often are built to aggressive schedules.  Constructors need to efficiently and safely manage their labor, materials, and equipment resources. These requirements demand a highly educated construction professional who is able to manage the complexities of modern building construction.

Student Learning

Classroom PresentationStudent learning is supported in a variety of ways. A dedicated faculty has a wide range of experience in the building industry. Courses are housed in "smart" classrooms and laboratories with a full-range of multimedia capability and contemporary equipment. The construction industry supports the program by providing internship opportunities, financial contributions, scholarships, and by seeking student participation in professional events. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a number of student chapters of professional organizations in construction. Through these student chapters, students have the opportunity to network with professionals, participate in construction management competitions, and attend annual conventions.

Presentation'Students graduating from the Construction Management  program are prepared to meet the challenges of modern construction and are highly sought after for placement with regional and national firms. Graduates are typically placed as project managers, field engineers, supervisors, or estimators. Careers are also available in related areas such as construction finance, insurance adjusting, product sales, building code administration, quality control, and safety management.

We are proud of the Construction Management program and the accomplishments of our graduates. For more information (please look over the construction management brochure) and/or to arrange a campus visit, please contact our department advisor at (309) 438-3661 or .

Team Work

Many courses emphasize team work. Students in TEC 328 Residential Development work in teams to develop a feasibility analysis for a new residential neighborhood. Teams are charged to present a convincing financial analysis that included best and worst case scenarios. In TEC 394 Construction Management and Administration, student teams develop and present pre-construction  proposals for a new commercial project. Presentations in both classes require students to estimate and schedule the project, develop site logistics plans, and take into account a range of variables from labor availability to environmental (EPA) issues.
